New York to Change Handicapped Signage

The new "Accessible" symbol
The new “Accessible” symbol

That familiar blue and white symbol of a sedentary person in a wheelchair is about to change throughout the state of New York.  The new symbol will be one of a very active person in a wheelchair.  Along with the signs, the designation “Handicapped” will be changed to “Accessible”.

Douglas Hovey, Executive Director of Independent Living, Inc.‎ in Newburg, NY‎ said, “The new symbol is more progressive and illustrates how we, as people with disabilities, are much more active at all levels, including areas of employment, housing and recreation . . . it shows people with disabilities moving forward.”

Hopefully, this is the beginning of a national trend and other states will follow suit.
